Sleeping During Lecture

It is good to remember good times, and university was one of them. I only remember good times. All other times where we had to study hard and sometimes results were not so pretty are gone and I never looked back once. But then let me tell you this funny and memorable story.

In our fourth year of university we ended up having tough professor for one of the solid mechanics course. He was a happy individual, but tough. He was one of those professors who wants you to pay attention in class - so guess what, he would ask questions, and if you didn't know then you are shining star on the spot light.

Well, one day the lecture wasn't very interesting, but we all tried hard not to show how bored we were, otherwise, this usually initiated question and answer period. Well there is always that small percentage of the population that will surprise you. So we are vividly paying attention, and suddenly professor points at one student in the auditorium - 'Hey you in the brown jacket, would you be kind enough to wake that guy up beside you' - he said. The student in the brown jacket looks back at the professor and answers - 'You put him to sleep, you wake him up'. I could see that probably every hair including mine, on every student got stiff when hearing the reply. But to our surprise, the professor started to laugh, and said - 'That was good one, I guess I will have to wake him up'. We all laughed, and the sleepy head didn't know what did just happpen.

  1. lol! that was very funny! Oh it is soo difficult to pay attention to boring lectures and which goes on and on and on! In such cases I do not move an inch and look at the teacher with unblinking, unseeing eyes and hope that I do not hit my head on the desk!!

  10. Really? Then I guess the difference lies in the Culture. I don't know how teachers are teaching this day but when I attend those secondary schools ten years back or so, I could only remembered lots of serious faces and much emphasis on their authority. May be it has changed completely now, or may be not. I don't know.

  13. Lol,that sounds like my teacher Olafur Thordarson, the greatest elementary teacher on earth. He was my teacher when I was 10,11 and 12 years old.He never got mad at us when we misbehaved,he just made funny comments and kept us, his beloved students in stitches all throughout the three school years that I was so blessed to have him as my teacher. What a journey it's been, now his daughter and I are friends on facebook.

  14. LOL! That is funny. I had a science prof who almost always put me to sleep. I had a friend who poked me every few minutes to keep me semi-conscious. She used to say, "If I can't sleep, you can't sleep!"

  15. Anna, I came over here yesterday, prepared a "brilliant" comment, then promptly lost my internet connection, along with my brilliant comment. This happened on another blog too. Today I'm on another computer with a better connection. We'll keep our fingers crossed. :)

I really enjoyed this post. I appreciated the student's comment and the prof had a good enough sense of humor to enjoy it himself. He must have been a good teacher, despite people nodding off.

  16. Oh that's a great story, and I would have been shocked to hear it. Thank god he laughed, good for him. Some professor egos are so big, they can't laugh at themselves.

  19. Kriz I think times are changing. When I attended elementary school in Europe, we not only had serious faces, but teachers were allowed to hit, put us in the corner, and yell like there was not tomorrow. Glad that those times are over. I think one of the factor is timing. Kriz thanks for dropping by again, Anna :)

  21. Thanks Sabi. I am sure you will like university, but you know I am done, it was lot of pressure and I don't think I would want to be there again. Enjoying my free spirit life now, lol. Matthew is doing fine, has few words also like ball, yes, mom, dad... it is so cool to see him speak.

Thanks again for asking, and hope all is well with you. Anna :)

  24. Hi San, I knew I heard someone knocking at the door, and no body was there when I opened, lol, but then you came back. Thanks again for your comeback. Yes he was a good teacher, I liked him even more when I got my final report, lol. I will never know if it was me getting all the right answers or the bell curve, lol. Thanks again San, appreciated your visit and comment. Anna :)

  25. Thanks Ruth, and you are so right about this: 'Some professor egos are so big, they can't laugh at themselves.' - we had few of those, students tried to say something funny and it would always go down hill and against us. Oh well, cannot have everything good. Thanks again for your comment Ruth. Anna :)

  28. Oh once in high school (I was very mischievous), my teacher caught me and said "If you do this again, I will tell your parents". We all hated that teacher so I replied "Why? You know me for 6 months, my parents know me for 15 years, what will YOU tell them...." Everyone was laughing but I was sent to the principal's office. :)

  37. LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL Excellent!! I loved the reply!

    Hi Anna,

Very good memories indeed! And your policy of only remembering the good stuff is perfect...cause the bad stuff only serves to make us grow, and once we do why keep chewing on it, right?

Thanks for the laugh, girl :D!

    Cheers

  41. I'll remember that one the next time I'm in a lecture and someone falls asleep. As for me, whether I've had 8 hours sleep or none at all, five mins into a lecture, my head starts doing the nod.
